What To Wear
Maternity & Babies: From Whimsy To Au Natural

Maternity clothing should be bold and fun! A colorful dress, a flowing skirt, jeans with a real waist unbuttoned, bare belly wrapped in fabric, bikini’s, a brightly patterned top—be daring and feminine. The simplest wardrobe choice for your maternity session is none at all! Moms to be are often stunned at the elegant images that result from creative posing and camera angles that show “just enough”. Think of your husband too. I had one mom whose husband was a pilot. She wore his captains hat and his jacket and nothing else! Do you love yoga? Try a fitted tank top and low waited yoga pants. We can even photograph you in simple yoga poses. Whatever you decide on, be sure to keep tightly fitted elastic waistbands and socks far far away for a few hours before your shoot so we avoid indentations in your skin. My littlest clients look best in nothing at all. Mom or dad can be the background too. (bring long sleeve black shirts!) Don’t feel you have to wake up baby. Sleeping is the best way to photograph newborns. Also try to limit the clothing selection to one outfit so baby doesn’t get fussy. For older babies, we can try cute clothes, sleepers or even a diaper with a simple cover.

Individuals & Kids: Think Texture & Personality
Bring everything you can think of (plus shoes, hats, tights, scarves, accessories) and we’ll piece outfits together. I love bold colors and patterns, but not logos or cartoon characters. Polka dots, stripes, kid-like, cheerful, happy, fun, youthful. I love fabrics with lots of texture (sweaters, denim, knits). Layers add interest and depth to an image, so pair up short/long-sleeved shirts, wear a jacket, put leggings under skirts and dresses, etc. I like a simple look, too–a flowing, white dress or a white tee and jeans. A wildly patterned pair of cargo pants and a hipster tee. Her funky hot pink tutu and cowboy boot. His superhero cape. Individual shots give your child a chance to show their personality. Without the concern of clashing or competing patterns that exist in a family shot, the possibilities are limitless! So break out those silly, crazy, cute outfits your kids love and let’s capture something bold, memorable and no holds barred fun!
Families & Couples: Coordinating, But NOT Exactly Matching
I know there’s so much more to you than khakis and a white dress shirt. You are unique individuals and the greatest part is, when you’re together in a single image, you *still* blend as a family. For your session, everyone should be in the same style–all dressy or all casual. Stick with similar or complimentary color tones and fabrics (everyone in pastels or jewel tones). Clothing should be complementary, but far from a matching uniform! I like kids to have at least one small part of their outfit reflect their personalities, like a hat or a fun t-shirt under a jacket or cool shoes. A simple rule to follow when choosing the family outfits…chose items for the entire family as if you were creating one outfit. If all your selections were put on one person, would it look good? A handy trick for those who are nervous to break out of monochrome madness…choose one patterned item (maybe a cute print dress for your daughter) and then select the rest of the family’s clothing from colors within that pattern!
